Background:
China is the largest consumer of coal in the world and a massive user of coal fired plants for the generation of domestic electricity. Despite air pollution and related respiratory diseases in both big cities and rural areas, coal still covers almost 70% of China energy needs. With an economic growth rate exceeding 10% in 2007 and a growing population, demand will continue to increase. It is therefore essential to diversify sources of energy production. One efficient and clean alternative to fossil fuel is the use of turbines operated by wind, a renewable energy.
Description:
This project objective is to install a set of wind turbines in north-eastern China. The program aims at protecting the environment and local communities’ health conditions as well as ensuring energy supply for surrounding villages, while contributing to their economic development.
Technology:
The project is part of the installation of a set of 66 wind turbines with a capacity of 49.5 MW each and an installed capacity of 750 kW. No wind turbine is located in the immediate vicinity of people’s houses and the facility does not have any negative impact (noise) for local communities.
Carbon credit type: VER
Standard: VCS
Project benefits:
Environmental benefits:
Fighting against global warming by using clean and renewable energy and reducing the greenhouse gas emissions in neighboring cities.
Promoting clean energy in north-eastern China.
Reducing atmospheric pollution and related environmental issues.
All wind turbines are located far away from people’s houses; there is no significant noise related to the facility.
Economic and social benefits:
Improving the living conditions of local communities with "clean" electricity by reducing the number of respiratory diseases.
Creating 30 sustainable local jobs for maintenance and construction of wind farms.
Accelerating the area’s economic development and supplying electricity more safely.
