storehouses of sahel: building of the pilot site

Cold rooms for communities of Niger

Location:

Niger’s Sahel region, in Karey Gourou, 20 km away from the North of Niamey.

Type of project:

Ecosolidaire® - food storage and energy independence.

Beginning of construction: October 2008.

Background:

Niger drastically lacks of refrigerated storage infrastructures. This shortcoming has resulted in a considerable loss of crops for already very poor local farmers. The country ranks last of 177 countries according to the HDI (Human Development Index). To answer this double challenge, EcoAct proposes to help local communities by building 100 refrigerated storage facilities.

Description:

“Storehouses of Sahel” enable the production of cold with a clean and innovative technology. This program builds on the partnership initiated between iTERRae and EcoAct. It consists in building granaries of 100m3 each, which will enable a better conservation of communities’ food staples. A pilot project will first be conducted, and then the model will be extended to Niger’s and neighboring countries’ vulnerable communities.

Technology:

Radiative cooling-based ITERRae technology.

Number of pilots built: 1

Status of the project:

First operations planned for December 2009.
